Have you ever wondered what some of your more favorite free dating sites used to look like way back in the day? Well I have and I tell you this, they look quite funny. No, I’m not making fun of or poking at any of these oldies but goldies of the free dating site scene. I’m just pointing out that when websites are first launched or projects have just begun, we may find ourselves going back to the old drawing board many times before we finally feel like we’ve gotten it right.
Below are the top five Ghosts of Free Dating Sites Past. But hold your horses – viewer discretion is advised.
My favorite ghost of free dating sites past is PlentyOfFish.com. PlentyOfFish.com is considered one of the largest free dating sites in the world to date. That claim is justified as PlentyOfFish.com owner Markus Fiend boasts a membership of over five million. But way back in the day (January 30th, 2003 to be exact) PlentyOfFish.com looked right funny.
These days PlentyOfFish has a blue background that is pleasant for the eyes, very few fish, integrated banner ads and much better organization but in 2003 it looked like the image to the right. My question? How did he get this far?
The second ghost of free dating sites past has to go to OKCupid.com which is also by far a very large and successful free dating site. It too has been around since 2003 but it wasn’t offering it’s single members much related to free dating back in those days. In fact, all OkCupid.com was offering in those days (February 11, 2004 to be exact) was a tiny piece of text at the top of the page – left aligned – saying “okcupid.com”. Go get’em tiger!
Later than year (June 22, 2004 to be exact) things changed. OKCupid.com adopted the nice-for-they-eyes-blue like PlentyOfFish, snagged a few stock photos of a few pretty women sitting by a computer screen – obviously looking for love. And what’s really interesting is that in those days they were actually accepting developer resumes. Nice touch.
They obviously and dramatically changed things up a bit over the years and successfully became what they are today: a safe haven for those looking for love in all the right places. Yes, on free dating sites.
The third ghost of free dating sites past belongs to non-other than FlirtBox.com. According to the way-back-machine they’ve been around since 2003 and have under-gone an array of changes over the years in the same way as the other two ghosts of free dating sites past. They too have now adopted the easy-on-the-eyes-blue background and their membership numbers have obviously increased substantially.
Our fourth ghost of free dating sites past is an oldie. They’ve been around since 1999. Our golden oldie is Mingles.com. My oh my how things have changed since then. Since 1999 they’ve ditched their sexy scarlet background for the easy-on-the-eyes-blue background that our other top 3 ghosts of free dating sites past sites have adopted as well. They’ve substantially increased in membership and have become world-renowned.
Our fifth and final ghost of free dating sites past would be none other than SinglesCanada.com. My how things have changed. The interesting thing about this free dating site is that it’s been around since December of 1998. Talk about trust. Once again they eventually decided to adopt the easy-on-the-eyes-blue background color that PlentyOfFish uses but the question remains: whose easy-on-the-eyes-blue background came first? It certainly wasn’t me!
